2019 Petaluma Gap | Marin County Syrah
The 2019 syrah is slightly meatier than the 2018 -- more iron and iodine. White pepper is pretty constant. Co-fermentation with viognier skins adds a floral component, but this is a little toned down from the preceding vintage.
Tasting Notes
John Gilman, View from the Cellar, 1.11.23, 93 pts --"Stewart Johnson’s 2019 Syrah was aged in an interesting combination of French and Hungarian oak barrels, with only seventeen percent new in this vintage. The wine includes forty percent whole clusters, was aged two years in barrel and bottled unfiltered after a single racking.
The wine comes in at 13.2 percent alcohol and offers up a beautiful bouquet of black raspberries, pepper, smoked meats, sweet stem tones, a lovely foundation of soil, black olive, a touch of oak and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and soil-driven in personality, with a fine core of fruit, ripe tannins and a long, nascently complex and very promising finish. This has a lovely lightness of step on the palate that one finds sometimes in top
examples of Côte-Rôtie, but seldom in American syrah. This is going to be an excellent wine with a bit of hibernation down in the cellar. Its suggested retail price is only $28 per bottle, making it an absolutely superb value! 2031-2075+. 93."

Ratings
Alder Yarrow, Vinography, 8.14.22, 8.5-9/10 -- "Medium to dark garnet in the glass, this wine smells of struck match, white pepper, and blackberries. In the mouth, blackberry and white pepper flavors have a faint saline quality to them and are backed by muscular, fleecy tannins. Lovely herbal and savory bone broth notes linger in the finish along with the blackberry florals. Tasty. "
